Details of failed trade between Oilers and Maple Leafs come out publicly

The 2025/26 NHL season has been plenty of fun thus far, and with the 2026 Olympic Games now in the rearview mirror, all attention turns to the trade deadline that will be here in just a matter of days.

Two Canadian teams that are looking to make some different changes are the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs, and after fairly quiet seasons on the trade front for both, we've now learned of a potential deal that almost came to fruition for both teams.

According to analyst Nick Kypreos, the two sides were talking about a potential swap of wingers that would have been Andrew Mangiapane to Toronto in exchange for Matias Maccelli, but according to reports, Toronto turned the deal down.

On paper, this deal wouldn't have changed too much for either team, as neither player has performed to expectations in 2025/26, but in the move, it would allow both a change of scenery, which Oilers GM Stan Bowman was likely trying to sell to Toronto in negotiations.

Despite failing to move Mangiapane in this deal, the Oilers are expected to trade the veteran forward ahead of the trade deadline after they signed him in the summer hoping that he could replicate the success of his 2021/22 campaign with their Alberta rivals.

Ultimately though, this one wasn't meant to be, but if neither team can find a good deal for these players in the coming days, it's one that they could come back too if they can find a suitable trade that benefits both parties.
