Connor McDavid was spotted in Montreal this week carrying his own sticks, and the Edmonton Oilers captain's luggage became the entire story.

Fans read the equipment as proof of hockey business.
It was the clearest possible proof of the opposite.
CCM Hockey runs its global head office out of Ville Saint-Laurent, on the island of Montreal. That is where the brand's marketing operation sits, which is why CCM athletes fly into Quebec in August instead of anywhere else.
Maxime Truman reported a CCM shoot was happening in the city, which accounts for both the sticks and the timing. McDavid has been a CCM athlete since 2015.

The control case nobody applied

Logan Cooley skated in Brossard the day before, alongside Ivan Demidov, wearing his Utah Mammoth gear. Same shoot, same city, same Canadiens practice facility.
Nobody floated Cooley to the Canadiens. The sighting only turned into a rumour because the player attached to it has an unresolved future.
That is the tell. The panic was never about geography, it was about Edmonton losing in the first round to the Anaheim Ducks while Montreal reached the Eastern Conference Final.

The calendar most fans have wrong

McDavid is not drifting toward free agency. He signed a two-year extension in October 2025 at a $12.5 million cap hit that runs through 2027-28.
That makes him a UFA in July 2028, not next summer. PuckPedia lists full no-movement protection in both years, so he cannot be sent anywhere without signing off first.
Expect this exact loop again next August, and the one after that.
As long as CCM shoots in Montreal and McDavid has term left, his sticks will keep landing in Quebec and the rumours will keep landing with them.
