Ville Koivunen's eight-year deal takes a turn after latest report

Pittsburgh re-signed the 23-year-old Finn through 2033-34 on Thursday, announced by president of hockey operations and general manager Kyle Dubas. The reaction has focused almost entirely on term.

PuckPedia's breakdown of the deal tells a different story. Koivunen's base salary in 2026-27 is $850,000 with a $2 million signing bonus attached, and 2027-28 repeats it at $900,000 plus another $2 million.

Signing bonus money is paid on schedule no matter where a player skates. Koivunen collects that $4 million whether he dresses in Pittsburgh or in Wilkes-Barre.

Agent Ian Pulver of The Will Sports Group did not sell eight years cheaply. He converted a résumé of seven NHL points in 39 games into guaranteed cash that no demotion, healthy scratch or bad camp can touch.

Koivunen just removed every professional risk he had for two full seasons, leaving fans and GM Kyle Dubas at higher risk.

The structure flips in 2028-29.

From that point the contract is straight salary, ranging from $4.25 million to $4.5 million with no bonus money in it.

Signing bonuses cannot be bought out, which makes the first two years untouchable. Everything after 2028 is ordinary paper Dubas can buy out, retain on, or move.

There is also the trade math inside it. An acquiring team next summer would pay $900,000 in real cash for a $4 million cap hit, which is exactly the kind of asset budget clubs hunt for.

Dubas did not gamble eight years on 47 games.

He bought two protected seasons for the player and six flexible ones for himself.
