Detroit's search for a new general manager has been complicated by lingering questions about Steve Yzerman's role, according to insider Elliotte Friedman.

Speaking on his 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman explained that the way the Red Wings initially announced Yzerman's departure created confusion among prospective candidates.
Yzerman moved from general manager to a senior advisor role under owner Chris Ilitch, but the messaging around that shift left some executives uncertain about how much power he would actually retain.
When the Red Wings first made the announcement that Steve Yzerman was out, they kinda made it sound like Yzerman would still be involved. I think some people were nervous about taking the job. I don't think that's gonna be the case.

Autonomy Now the Selling Point

Friedman's comments suggest the early ambiguity may have cost Detroit some interest during the initial stages of its search.
Since then, the organization has reportedly shifted its messaging, emphasizing to candidates that the next GM will operate with full autonomy over hockey operations and report directly to ownership rather than to Yzerman.
That reassurance comes as Detroit works through a list of internal and external candidates, including assistant GMs already in-house and names from outside the organization.
The Red Wings have been without a permanent GM since mid-July, a stretch that overlapped with the draft and the opening weeks of free agency.
With training camp approaching, Friedman's update signals the Red Wings are trying to close the gap between perception and reality before finalizing their hire, hoping clarity around Yzerman's actual role helps seal a decision soon.
Only time will tell whether or not the Red Wings are able to get this situation squared away.
