The Philadelphia Flyers have been exploring ways to strengthen their roster, but their interest in Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson has yet to produce meaningful progress, according to NHL insider David Pagnotta.
Speaking on The Sheet with Jeff Marek, Pagnotta discussed Philadelphia's efforts to address weaknesses in its lineup and confirmed that the team has checked in on Edvinsson. However, the insider's latest assessment suggests those discussions have stalled without a clear path toward a deal.
We all know they'd like to improve at the dot; they'd like to improve on defense, they've been checking in on Simon Edvinsson, hasn't really gone anywhere
The comments highlight the difficulty Philadelphia could face as it looks for upgrades. Although the Flyers have identified areas that need attention, finding the right player at the right price remains a significant challenge.
Why the Flyers Want Simon Edvinsson
Edvinsson would be an attractive addition for a Philadelphia team looking to improve its defensive group. The 23-year-old Swedish defenseman brings an impressive combination of size, mobility and offensive potential, making him the type of player teams can build around for years.
Standing 6-foot-6, Edvinsson has the physical tools to defend against opposing forwards while possessing the skating ability to move the puck and contribute offensively. He recorded 25 points in 72 games during the 2025-26 season, demonstrating his potential to become an important contributor on the blue line.
Philadelphia's interest also makes sense given its broader need for defensive improvements. Adding a young defenseman with top-four potential could provide a longer-term solution rather than a temporary fix.
Philadelphia Faces an Uncertain Trade Situation
The biggest obstacle is that interest does not necessarily translate into progress. Pagnotta's comments indicate that the Flyers have made inquiries, but there is no confirmation that the two organizations are close to an agreement.
Detroit also has significant leverage. Edvinsson remains a valuable young asset, and the Red Wings must decide whether a trade would provide enough value to justify moving him.
For Philadelphia, the situation leaves an important question unanswered: can general manager Danny Briere find a way to land a defenseman who fits the team's plans?
For now, Edvinsson remains a name to watch, but Pagnotta's update suggests Flyers fans should temper expectations about a potential deal.
