Simon Edvinsson has drawn interest from at least 10 NHL teams, but the Red Wings still want to sign him. Here is where the contract talks stand.
The Detroit Red Wings are about to find out how much Simon Edvinsson is worth to the rest of the league.
The unsigned restricted free agent has reportedly drawn calls from a long list of teams, and the Boston Bruins are one of them.
Pierre LeBrun believes at least 10 clubs have checked in.
Detroit's message to every one of them has been the same.
Interim GM Shawn Horcoff would rather re-sign the 23-year-old than move him.
Detroit still wants a deal
Horcoff has full authority from ownership to get an extension done, and the Red Wings have offered Edvinsson long, mid and short term contracts.
Term isn't the sticking point. Money is.
LeBrun says a sizeable gap on salary remains between the two sides.
That matters for a team that has had a rough few months, with Dylan Larkin asking for a trade and Steve Yzerman stepping away as GM.
Edvinsson, the sixth overall pick in 2021, is Detroit's second best defenseman behind Moritz Seider.
He is currently back in Sweden training with Frolunda while he waits.
What happens if talks drag on
Elliotte Friedman reported last weekend that Edvinsson now prefers a trade, which makes the next few days even more interesting.
LeBrun was blunt about it. The longer this goes on, the more a trade becomes possible.
Edvinsson put up nine goals and 16 assists in 72 games last season, and he can't play for anyone until he signs a new deal.
Detroit already opened the season without him, and every game he misses adds pressure on Horcoff to find a solution.
That is a tough spot for a team that hasn't reached the playoffs in a decade.
