NHL owners revolt over expansion talks

The push for a 33rd NHL franchise may have just hit resistance from inside the league's own boardroom.
Insider Darren Dreger revealed that a group of owners does not support expansion and wants its concerns heard before the league moves any further.
Dreger laid out the opposition this way:
There's some NHL owners who want to be heard because they do not feel like an expansion is a good idea. They don't believe that the talent pool is deep enough to sustain a competitive balance, and furthermore, another team in a non-tax state like Texas, in Houston or Austin, further erodes competitive balance.
Why Some Owners Are Hesitant
The objections boil down to two issues. The first is talent. Adding another franchise means filling another full roster, and some owners worry the player pool cannot stretch that far without watering down the product on the ice.
The second is geography and taxes. Texas has no state income tax, which lets a contract go further for players and gives teams there a recruiting edge when free agents compare offers.
That edge is a sore spot for owners in high-tax markets, especially the Canadian clubs that already battle tax disadvantages every summer.
Competitive balance is the heart of the salary cap system, and some in the room see a new Texas team as another tilt of the playing field.
Expansion Momentum Still Building
Dreger's report arrives as the expansion conversation keeps gaining speed. Houston and Austin have both been named as leading candidates for a Texas team, and the NHL has openly shown interest in growing its footprint in the United States. Expect the debate to stay loud as the league weighs its next move.
Still, expansion requires owner approval, so a vocal group of dissenters could complicate the timeline.
The league can point to new revenue from expansion fees and a larger fan base, but owners worried about talent dilution and tax advantages will want those answers first.
For a league chasing growth, convincing its own owners may now be the biggest hurdle.
