Michal Postava will start in goal for the Red Wings tonight in Edmonton, making his first NHL start against the Oilers at Rogers Place.
The Detroit Red Wings are turning to Michal Postava in goal tonight, and it will be the first NHL start of his career.
The 24-year-old Czech netminder gets the call on the road against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place, with puck drop set for 9:30 p.m. ET.
It won't be his first time on NHL ice, though.
Postava got into the Vancouver game in the third period after John Gibson had to leave, and Detroit went on to win 5-2.
Now he gets a full night to show what he can do.
How Postava got the call
Detroit recalled him on an emergency basis when backup Daniil Tarasov tweaked something and went on the day-to-day list.
Gibson returned to start Saturday in Calgary, but the Red Wings lost that one, and it ended a stretch of six straight games with at least a point.
Tarasov was still listed as day to day heading into tonight.
Postava signed with Detroit as a free agent out of Czechia in 2025, fresh off helping Kometa Brno win the Extraliga title.
He took on the bulk of the starts down the stretch for the Grand Rapids Griffins last season and was given the crease for the Calder Cup playoffs.
A tough building to debut in
Edmonton is a lot to ask of a first-timer.
The Oilers sit at 8-2-1 and are stinging from a 7-2 loss to Toronto on Saturday, so expect a group that wants to respond.
Detroit's penalty kill has been rough too, running at just 65.8 percent, which won't make Postava's night any easier.
Still, this is the moment he's been working toward since he crossed the Atlantic.
A chance to start in the NHL does not come around every day, and the Red Wings are trusting him with it tonight.
Watch how he handles the early shots and settles in quickly.
