Cole Caufield makes bold claim to Canada about his Canadiens after Heritage Classic win

Following Montreal's thrilling 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets at the 2026 NHL Heritage Classic on October 25, Caufield had a message about the Canadiens' passionate supporters.

Speaking with TNT's Jackie Redmond about the Montreal fans who travelled to Winnipeg, Caufield said the following:

The 25-year-old forward certainly had plenty to celebrate after helping Montreal secure another important victory.

Caufield recorded two assists, contributing to both Canadiens goals during the outdoor showdown at Princess Auto Stadium.

Lane Hutson opened the scoring in the second period before Kaiden Guhle doubled Montreal's advantage.

Winnipeg's Isak Rosen answered late in the third period, but the Canadiens held on for the victory.

Goaltender Jacob Fowler also delivered an outstanding performance, making 33 saves to help Montreal improve to 6-3-2 on the season.

However, Caufield's comments might attract even more attention than his performance.

The Canadiens have one of hockey's most historic and passionate fan bases, but calling them Canada's favourite team is a bold statement considering the fierce loyalty surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks and other Canadian franchises.

For Montreal supporters, Caufield's confidence reflects the excitement surrounding the team's young core and growing ambitions.

For rival fans, however, the statement could become another reason to fuel hockey's biggest Canadian rivalries.

One thing is certain: Caufield knows how to make headlines both on and off the ice.
