Detroit Red Wings winger Patrick Kane revealed today that he is open to the idea of re-signing with the team in the offseason. The move could solidify Detroit's spot in the playoffs next season, given how well he's played this year.
The team took a chance on Kane be signing him well into the season this year. Kane was coming off a surgery that no other NHL player has truly recovered from and still been able to play at a high level. As such, things very well could have not worked out for Kane and the Red Wings. However, the superstar has miraculously returned to near-prime form, scoring 20 goals and being just under a point-per-game with the team this season.
The Red Wings fate this season is still in question as the playoff race in the Eastern conference will come down to the last game of the season. They currently sit on the outside looking in as Washington holds the second wild card spot. Washington will take on the Flyers while Detroit will take on the Canadiens tonight. Should both teams win, the Caps will get in with the tiebreaker.
However, if things were to play out like that, it might not be the last time we wee Kane in a Red Wings lineup. He noted that they are still focused on winning and getting into the playoffs this season, but recognized that re-signing with the Red Wings is a very real possibility this offseason.
Hopefully, everything will line up and Kane will lead the Red Wings into the playoffs. Regardless of what happens though, it will be decided tonight.
