Hardcore Todd McLellan Puts Red Wings Captain Dylan Larkin on Blast After Brutal Loss
Todd McLellan was not mincing any words when it came to his team's captain Dylan Larkin, as he laid into the Red Wings player in the media post-game.
"I can't beat around the bush - he was missing," said McLellan. "He's a big boy, he can handle hearing that. He's going to hear it from me."
McLellan doesn't believe Larkin is still tired from the 4 Nations
McLellan didn't hold back in criticizing
Larkin, even dismissing the notion that Larkin might still be fatigued from dressing for four contests with Team USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.
"I'd like to think that the 4 Nations is so far past us already," McLellan said. "We've had enough rest. I'm not using it as an excuse. I'm not even going to go there. We're playing big games, we need our big players to play big games, and we'll need more from not only him but some others."
Regardless of how Larkin felt following the exhausting tournament, his performance against Columbus was less than stellar.
"Just a lot of mishandles, unsure plays that he usually makes."
- Todd McLellan
He finished with a minus-three rating, managed only one shot on goal, and was below average in the face-off circle, winning only four of 13 draws.
While McLellan did not attribute the entire defeat to his captain, he made it clear he is looking for more from him in the future.
Detroit has another chance against Columbus on Saturday, but this time away from home, during the yearly "Stadium Series."
