Chris Ilitch made his first hire in the Red Wings' GM overhaul

Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reported that Ilitch has hired an outside search firm, and that Detroit wants a candidate who is analytically minded in decision making, not just in an advisory capacity.

That second detail is the story.

Detroit has had data people for years, and they sat one rung below the person who actually made the calls.

Removing that rung is a structural change, and it has to happen before a candidate signs anything.

Nobody accepts a modernizing mandate without knowing where the final say lives.

Shawn Horcoff is running day to day operations in the interim, and that authority deliberately does not extend to trades. That looks like a roster decision and functions as a hiring decision.

Steve Yzerman ran hockey operations from April 2019 until mid-July, when he shifted to a senior adviser role under Ilitch.

Anything a caretaker moves now gets moved on the outgoing model's logic.

So Ilitch froze it. The next general manager inherits the assets, the cap sheet and the unfinished contract files exactly as they are, which is the most honest thing an owner can offer a candidate arriving in August.

Most NHL general manager jobs get filled from inside the sport's referral network, which is why the same names circulate every cycle.

A search firm is a bet on a longer list rather than a faster one.

Todd McLellan remains behind the bench, which buys the process time it would not have if the coaching chair were empty too.

Detroit has missed the playoffs for ten straight seasons, so the urge to name someone quickly is real.

Building the job first is the only version of this that does not repeat the last seven years.
