The NHL's playoff format as it stands right now is incredibly unpopular, and now Cale Makar has called on the league to return things to the way they were before.
In years gone by, the NHL's playoff format was perfect, as the seeding in the regular season proved to matter with the first round being 1v8, 2v7, 3v6 and 4v5, with fans absolutely loving the matchups that this provided.
However, in recent times the NHL have made a change and stuck by it, adding in a new format that simply doesn't make sense on paper, but despite the criticisms, Gary Bettman has been against any change.
Avalanche superstar calls for change
Despite that, the league have never been called out publicly for it, until now, as Colorado Avalanche superstar Cale Makar has called upon the NHL to change things back to the way they were.
I feel like all the players want back to 1-to-8.
On paper, that format just makes much more sense, as the teams in the top four theoretically have a major advantage over their opponents, which is what they earn throughout an 82-game regular season, and deserve to be rewarded.
As of right now, it's only the top two seeds that are now rewarded as they play the two Wild Card teams, with the other four teams are mixed up and forced to play their division rivals.
Sure, this could have led to good rivalries, but now, it gives us repeat matchups that no one truly wants to see, with the Kings and Oilers matching up for four straight seasons in the post-season, and it's a format that fans have been begging to change.
Ultimately, we'll wait to see if Makar's public criticism translates into private negotiations between the NHL and the NHLPA about a potential change, but as of right now, it appears the new format is here to stay.
