Alex Vlasic never meant to be the one delivering the news, but that is exactly what happened to Louis Crevier this summer.
The Blackhawks defenseman was vacationing in Italy on June 23 when Chicago finalized its blockbuster trade for Bowen Byram, sending Crevier to the Sabres as part of the deal.
The problem was Crevier's cell service overseas was spotty at best, so he had no idea he had just been traded.
Vlasic, who was texting with him at the time, unknowingly became the one to spill the news before Crevier's own agent could reach him.
A confusing text exchange
The two teammates were going back and forth about the trade buzz swirling around the team that day.
Vlasic saw the update mentioning Crevier's name attached to the deal and reacted before realizing his friend had no clue what was going on.
Crevier, still soaking up his Italian getaway, assumed someone else on the roster had been moved instead.
It took a few more confused messages before the reality set in that he was headed to Buffalo.
"I texted him, 'Dude, I'm so sad.' He was like, 'Oh, why? Did somebody on the team get traded?'"

Vlasic later admitted he felt bad about how it all played out, joking that he basically became Crevier's agent in that moment since the real one could not get through.
Looking ahead to a new era
Despite the awkward way it unfolded, Crevier has found a silver lining since Buffalo sits much closer to his hometown of Quebec City.
Meanwhile, Vlasic is excited about what Byram brings to Chicago's blue line, and the two could realistically end up as defensive partners once training camp begins next month.
Vlasic also opened up about skating alongside Patrick Kane over the summer and how the young core is preparing to lead a franchise trying to speak its way back into playoff contention.
