Carolina Hurricanes Forced to Act Quickly After Top Prospect Nearly Demands Trade

There has been an infusion of young talent in the NHL as of late, led by Canadiens star Ivan Demidov, and after his arrival, Carolina Hurricanes fans believed a Russian star of their own was on the way.

That came after it was announced Alexander Nikishin, a former third-round pick and arguably the best defenseman in the world outside of the NHL was headed to North America, with many believing he'd simply slot into their lineup.

However, after the organization determined it would be best for him to start in the AHL, they tried to make that work, but when it didn't GM Eric Tulsky and the organization were quickly called out by Nikishin's agent, who threatened a trade if things didn't work out.

Now, after the Chicago Wolves were eliminated from the Calder Cup Playoffs in the AHL, Tulsky announced that Nikishin's contract with the NHL has been registered, with no other option now moving forward.

This could be a big boost for Carolina, as the 23-year old has been a star in the KHL in recent years, posting 45 or more points a year over the last three seasons, and with great size at 6-foot-4, there's no reason why his game can't translate to the NHL.

Now, we'll wait and see whether or not he gets some action at the NHL level in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but with size and so much talent, it's safe to say that the 'Canes may have a future star on their hands.
