Anaheim Ducks Offer Head Coaching Job to Controversial Candidate Formerly Banned From the NHL
The Anaheim Ducks are reportedly considering a highly controversial move with their next head coach according to NHL insider Frank Seravalli.
The Anaheim Ducks did reasonably well this year, finishing with a 35-37-10 record, good for 80 points, just two shy of a .500 points percentage.
This is a substantial improvement over the team's performance last year in which he went 27-50-5, good for just 59 points.
That's a 21-point increase year over year. If the team can replicate that again next season, they will be in the playoffs.
It is a big ask for a young and relatively unexperienced club, but with the salary cap taking a big lead this summer the Ducks could very well have a good chance of pulling it off.
That being said, the organization still needs a new head coach after Greg Cronin was relieved of his duties.
Making the playoffs with a first-year coach could be difficult as the players adapt to a new system, but Pat Verbeek could have a controversial trick up his sleeve to give his team an edge.
That would be to bring back former coach Joel Quenneville, who was barred from working in the league for several years due to his connections with the Chicago Blackhawks scandal.
According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, Verbeek is legitimately considering hiring coach Q, and he has already been given an interview.
The Ducks would likely face significant backlash for making the move, similar to how the Blue Jackets were criticized for hiring Mike Babcock.
But could it be the move that gets the team into the playoffs? Would that be worth the bad PR?
Stay tuned to find out if Mr. Verbeek is really willing to take this risk.
