Buffalo Sabres bolster blue line with low-risk veteran signing

The move continues a nomadic stretch for the 32-year-old, who is now set to suit up for his fourth team in as many seasons.

Grzelcyk began his career in Boston, where the Bruins drafted him in the third round back in 2012, then bounced to Pittsburgh, followed by a one-year stop in Chicago before landing in Buffalo.

It has been a whirlwind couple of years for a player who once looked like a fixture on the Bruins' left side.

Grzelcyk spent last season with the Blackhawks, chipping in 12 assists across 69 games.

He's not going to wow anyone with offensive numbers, but his skating and ability to move pucks out of his own zone have kept NHL teams calling year after year.

Over his career, he has appeared in 596 games, notching 26 goals and 187 points combined between his time with Boston, Pittsburgh and Chicago.

For Buffalo, this reads as a low-risk depth addition.

Grzelcyk won't be counted on for a top-pairing role, but a smart, mobile defenseman on a modest cap hit gives the Sabres flexibility as they figure out their pairings in camp.

Buffalo has been searching for reliable secondary options on the back end, and Grzelcyk fits that mold.

At this price point, there's little downside.

If Grzelcyk struggles to find his footing, the Sabres aren't tied to anything long-term.

If he clicks with Buffalo's system, he could carve out a real role on a team looking for stability on defense this fall.
