Trevor Zegras laid out a hit on Michael Rasmussen that was uncalled on the ice, but now the young Ducks forward has been handed a three-game suspension, the first major suspension in the career of the young 23-year old star.
The Anaheim Ducks lost a thrilling matchup with the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday night, but the story of the night was Trevor Zegras, who laid a late and dirty hit on Detroit Michael Rasmussen, which somehow went uncalled on the ice.
Unsurprisingly, it was revealed on Monday that he would be having a hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety, and now, the official verdict has come down through an announcement on social media.
Given how unnecessary and late the hit on Rasmussen was, the Department of Player Safety came down hard on Zegras, as he has officially been suspended for three games.
This is yet another blow to Zegras' 2024/25 season, which has gone from one bad incident to another, with the 23-year old struggling to string impressive performances together, posting just 7 goals and 16 points in 34 games played for the Ducks thus far.
The play on Sunday was clearly a ploy from Zegras to start showing the physical side of his game which has been lacking since he arrived in the NHL, but unfortunately he went about it in a very illegal manner.
We'll see how he adjusts when he gets back on the ice after this suspension, but if he can channel this type of aggressiveness and play within himself while bringing the physicality, we could see a new style of play from Zegras, one that would serve him well if the production doesn't turn around anytime soon.
