Jake Walman signed a big deal to stay long-term in Edmonton, but he's already suffered a major injury setback early in the 2025/26 season.
The Edmonton Oilers suffered a tough loss in their first game of the 2025/26 campaign on Wednesday night, falling 4-3 in a shootout to the rival Calgary Flames in the first edition of the Battle of Alberta this year.
While they
managed to sign Jack Roslovic during the game, unfortunately, this isn't the only bad news that the Oilers endured in the last 24 hours, as they've now placed a key piece of their blue line on Injured Reserve.
Jake Walman Officially Placed on Injured Reserve
After the game, the Edmonton Oilers announced a surprise move, with Jake Walman, fresh off his 7x$7 million extension with the team officially placed on Injured Reserve by the Oilers.
Walman missed the season opener against the Flames after an injury setback earlier in the pre-season, with the talented blue liner not appearing in a game since their first pre-season matchup with Calgary.
He has skated since that point, but unfortunately, he's clearly not close enough to 100% to take the ice for this team, and now, they'll use the spare spot cleared up by his injury to bring in Roslovic, pushing a major decision further down the road.
It's unclear at this point just how long Walman will be out, but given how important he is to the Oilers blue line, they'll be hoping he can recover and get back on the ice early in the season, and given the production that he brings on both ends of the ice and the struggles his replacement
Alec Regula had in his place, his return becomes even more important.
