Zachary Bolduc and Martin St-Louis now have a Game 3 officiating issue that won't fade quietly.

The flashpoint is not just the penalty. It's what official Kyle Rehman reportedly told Alex Lyon before the last sequence.
According to Eric Engels, Rehman told Lyon he would protect him, then called Bolduc for entering the crease even though Bolduc did not touch the Buffalo Sabres goalie.
That changed the whole read on the play. It turned a net-front battle into a Buffalo power play and put the Canadiens' bench in damage-control mode.
Montreal had no room for that kind of swing. The Canadiens went 48-24-10 this season, but playoff margins shrink fast when special teams get handed a door.
Bolduc's problem was location. He pushed into a dangerous area, gave the official a decision to make, and the Sabres got the benefit.

Rehman's warning to Lyon changes the fallout

The clip looks worse because the contact never matches the punishment. Bolduc drives near the crease, Lyon stays upright, and the whistle still tilts the sequence.
The second angle adds the real fuel. Zachary Bolduc and Conor Timmins both leave for roughing, but Bolduc gets the extra minor that hands Buffalo the advantage.
That is why this is more than fan noise. If a referee announces protection to one goalie, then immediately rewards that side on a borderline crease play, the optics are rough.
Buffalo earned 109 points this season, so Lindy Ruff's team does not need help finding leverage. A late power play in a tight series is already enough.
For St-Louis, the message has to be simple: stay out of the crease, stay out of the official's hands, and make Buffalo beat Montreal at 5-on-5.
Bolduc is not the only story now. Rehman's management of the moment is.
