Top Goalie Prospect Abandons Maple Leafs to Join Stars Development Camp

Given that the Toronto Maple Leafs are the biggest game in town when it comes to hockey in Ontario, it's no surprise that many un-drafted players from the Ontario Hockey League often get their first chance in the professional ranks in the Maple Leafs system.

One player that many expected Toronto to bring to development camp is goaltender Austin Elliott from the London Knights, with the 21-year old showing promise that he could be a late bloomer and a potential NHLer of the future.

However, a new report from Joshua Kloke of The Athletic reveals that Elliott will not be attending Maple Leafs development camp this summer after not being invited, and instead, he'll head to Dallas to try out with the Stars.

The 21-year old joined London from the WHL's Saskatoon Blades in 2024/25, and in 33 starts for the Knights, he posted an incredibly impressive 2.10 GAA with a .924 save percentage.

In the Memorial Cup, things got even better for Elliott, as he tallied a .936 save percentage with a 1.74 GAA as the Knights would go on to win the Cup, catapulting him into major attention across the NHL.

It's unclear exactly what the Maple Leafs don't see in Elliott, as he has a good frame at 6-foot-1 on top of those fantastic numbers, and while he wasn't always elite with the Blades, he has consistently posted a GAA under 3.00 in his time in the CHL.

Toronto's loss could be Dallas' gain after all, as the Stars are more than willing to give him a chance, and while the Maple Leafs may one day be the dream of the Calgary native, for now he's going to try and work his way into the NHL wherever he can.
