The Court of Arbitration for Sport ordered the IIHF to readmit Russia to its 2027 championships, overturning a ban in place since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Russian hockey is heading back to the world stage, and the IIHF is not happy about it.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled Friday that Russian national teams must be readmitted immediately, wiping out the ban that has stood since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
CAS found the IIHF did not provide enough evidence to back up its security concerns.
The ruling covers 2026-27 events, including the men's World Championship in Germany, the World Juniors, and the women's and under-18 tournaments.
The federation says it is disappointed and disagrees with the decision, insisting its calls were needed to protect everyone involved.
It will follow the court's order, but it made clear the concerns behind its original stance have not gone away.
Why the timing is a mess
The bigger headache is the calendar.
Groups and schedules for the men's Worlds and the World Juniors are already locked in.
Adding a team means working with national associations, organizing committees and host authorities, then reworking formats, travel, hotels and security plans.
The IIHF says it will urgently figure out what steps are needed and how long they will take.
The first tournament up could be the World Juniors in Edmonton and Red Deer, which kick off Dec. 26.
Germany hosts the men's Worlds in May, and that lands right on the desk of new IIHF president Franz Reindl, whose home country is the host.
What could still change
CAS did not decide whether Russia would play as neutral athletes without national symbols, so that fight is far from finished.
Belarus, also shut out since 2022, was not part of the ruling.
For hockey fans, this is the moment a long running debate turns into real schedules and real rosters.
