Routine testing may save a hockey players life after tumor found
German pro hockey player Tobias Eder was undergoing routine testing with the Berlin Polar Bears prior to the 2024-25 DEL season when a tumor was discovered.
Despite the fact that NHL training camps don't begin until September, other leagues around the world have already started the preparations for their seasons. Usually before a season starts, all players are required to undergo testing and take physicals to ensure they are in the best shape physically and mentally. Unfortunately, a lot of players do not pass these tests, and whats even worse is that some players, such as
Tobias Eder receive crushing news.
Tobias Eder is a German player who is only 26, and has spent his entire pro career in the top league in Germany, the Deutschde Eishockey Liga (DEL). Tobias Eder played for the Berlin Polar Bears for the first time last season and won the championship. He also played at the IIHF World Championship in the spring for Germany.
Tobias Eder was undergoing routine testing for the start of this upcoming season when he received some terrible news. Someone from the team released a statement that a tumor was found during testing on Tobias Eder and that he was "seriously ill".
"Tobias Eder, striker for the Eisbären Berlin, is seriously ill. During the sports medical examinations prior to the new season, the forward was diagnosed with a malignant tumor, which requires immediate treatment. Eder has already begun medical treatment.
Tobias Eder and Eisbären Berlin ask for your understanding that no further comments will be made beyond the information provided. Please refrain from asking any further questions."
What a shock this must have been for all of Tobias Eder's family, friends, teammates and the fans. Tobias Eder says that he had no warning signs or indication that he had anything wrong, so hopefully it wasn't severe enough where it is too far gone, and that they will be able to cure him since they caught it early enough.
Tobias Eder played 52 games with the Berlin Polar Bears last season where he scored a total of 22 goals and nine assists.
No doubt that the entire German hockey community will now be rallying around Tobias Eder and everyone even here in North America will be cheering him on in his fight against this awful disease. Good luck!
