This evening the Philadelphia Flyers have shocked the hockey world by signing Anaheim Ducks star Leo Carlsson to an offer sheet.
The NHL offseason has been full of surprises including an offer sheet by the New Jersey Devils for Barrett Hayton.
Now, the Philadelphia Flyers led by GM Danny Briere have added to the excitement by sending an offer sheet for Leo Carlsson.
We have tendered an offer sheet to Anaheim center Leo Carlsson. The offer is a five-year contract worth an average annual value (AAV) of $18M, which would require four of the Flyers first-round draft picks in each of the next four seasons as compensation.
Now, the Ducks. will have 7 days to match this monumental offer made by the Flyers.
Ducks forced to match monstrous offer made by Flyers for Leo Carlsson
When free agency first opened, the Ducks announced publicly they would match any offer made by another team in free agency.
Carlsson, 21, had 67 points in 71 games and is one of the elite two-way centers in the NHL impacting the game all 200-feet.
This offer will really test that statement from the Ducks as this is a massive offer that would have major implications on their salary cap going forward.
If the Ducks do lose Carlsson it would set them back in a major way while boosting the Flyers into an instant contender.
Now, all eyes will be on the Ducks, to see if GM Pat Verbeek is willing and able to spend that much salary cap space on one player.
As more information is provided on this situation we will continue to bring all of the latest news on Carlsson's future.
