Patrik Laine's NHL hopes now down to just two teams

The Patrik Laine waiting game may finally be nearing its end, and two clubs appear to be setting the pace.
Reporter @makinenantti, speaking on the Kimanttia podcast, reports that the Detroit Red Wings and Los Angeles Kings have been "the most active teams in trying to sign UFA Patrik Laine this week." With the season now underway, the sniper's market is finally taking shape.
Why Both Clubs Make Sense
For Detroit, Laine represents a low-cost swing on goal scoring. His previous contract carried an $8.7 million cap hit, but it expired after last season, so any new deal should come at a far friendlier price, likely with incentives.
The Kings are no strangers to this pursuit. Los Angeles was linked to the Finnish winger before the trade deadline, though nothing materialized at that time. Now, with Laine available for nothing but a contract, the Kings can revisit their interest without surrendering a single asset.
Health and Production Remain Key
Any suitor will weigh Laine's recent availability. The 28-year-old appeared in only five games for Montreal last season and finished with a single assist.
Still, his résumé includes three 30-goal campaigns, and a healthy version could bring real value to a top-nine role or a power play unit.
That uncertainty is why a short, incentive-heavy agreement appears the most logical path. A deal loaded with performance bonuses would protect either club if injuries return, while still giving Laine a stage to rebuild his value ahead of next summer.
The pitches differ. Detroit can offer a chance to help a club hungry to climb the Atlantic Division standings, while Los Angeles can promise meaningful offensive minutes and power play time on a retooling roster.
Laine has not yet chosen a destination, and other teams could still jump into the conversation. Earlier this summer, several clubs were tied to the sniper, so the field may not be settled.
For now, though, Detroit and Los Angeles are the names to track as the Finnish forward weighs a decision that could shape the rest of his career.
