The Philadelphia Flyers have placed defenseman Helge Grans on waivers, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, and the move could hand another NHL team a chance to add some blue line depth.

The 24-year-old has dressed for just one game this season, a 5-1 loss to Boston in which he logged 12:26, blocked a shot, and finished minus-1. He then sat as a healthy scratch during Sunday's 4-1 defeat to Carolina.
Philadelphia (0-5-2) hosts Seattle on Tuesday, and if Grans clears, he becomes eligible for assignment to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. He has spent most of his five years in North America in the AHL.

Why Another Team Could Claim Grans

The profile is easy to like. Grans is a 6-foot-4, 205-pound right-shot defenseman, a combination nearly every club covets, and he is still only 24. The 2020 second-round pick arrived in Philadelphia through the 2023 three-team trade that sent Ivan Provorov to Columbus.
His contract also helps. Grans signed a two-year, $1.575 million extension in May 2025, and it became a one-way deal this season. For a team dealing with injuries on the back end, that is a low-risk price for size and upside.
For Philadelphia, the timing matters. The roster is full at 23 players, so the waiver move clears the path to reassign him if no one bites, and it may also signal that Cam York or Rasmus Ristolainen is close to returning from injury.

The Case Against a Claim

Interest is far from guaranteed. Grans has only seven NHL games to his name, and Charlie O'Connor of PHLY Sports said Saturday's game showed he is not ready for the league.
He also went unclaimed on waivers last September, which suggests teams were unconvinced then.
Waivers clear Tuesday, and the result will say plenty about how the league views him. If a team bets on his frame and age, Grans gets a fresh start. If not, he heads to the AHL as a call-up option for a Flyers group still searching for its first win.
