This comes just days after Jeff Marek, host of the Jeff Marek show, and Elliotte Friedman's podcast, 32 Thoughts, was effectively fired by Sportsnet for leaking picks at the 2024 NHL draft before they were announced. According to Siegel, Marek's firing was a stand-alone incident, but more layoffs are coming.
Naturally, this immediately led to wild speculation as to who at Sportsnet may be next to go. Since Ron MacLean is perhaps the most well-known name associated with the network, many believed he could be among those who will get laid off this summer.
That being said, Siegel himself has since made a statement about MacLean's position with the network. While he would not outright confirm one way or another what his future will be, he seemed to heavily imply that his job is not in question. However, he did hint that he could be done with the network once the NHL agreement with Sportsnet expires at the end of the 2025-26 season.
Could these be the last years of MacLean's career? He is certainly getting up there in age, so it is only a matter of time before he calls his last season. Hopefully, though, there will still be at least a couple more seasons with him as host of HNIC.
