Matt Dumba is officially retiring after 748 NHL games, a career that started with the Minnesota Wild and ended with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Matt Dumba is officially hanging up his skates.
The defenseman finishes his NHL career at 748 games, with 85 goals, 176 assists and 261 points.
Minnesota took him seventh overall in 2012, and he turned into a fixture on the Wild blue line.
He debuted in 2013-14 and stayed for 10 seasons, putting up 236 points in 598 games.
That ranks second in goals and fourth in points among all Wild defensemen.
His best year was 2017-18, when he scored 14 goals and finished with 50 points in all 82 games.
Bigger than hockey
Dumba won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for 2019-20, an award for leadership on the ice and work in the community.
He was also one of the leaders of the Hockey Diversity Alliance and put real time into making the sport more welcoming.
Five teams along the way
Things got more complicated after Minnesota.
Dumba signed with the Arizona Coyotes in August 2023 and played 58 games there before the Tampa Bay Lightning grabbed him at the March 2024 deadline.
He added 18 regular season games and five playoff games with Tampa.
Dallas handed him a two-year, $7.5 million deal that summer, but it never really worked out, and he was a healthy scratch for all 18 playoff games in 2025.
The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired him that July, and he got into only 11 NHL games last season before the Penguins waived him in April.
So the full list reads Minnesota Wild, Arizona Coyotes, Tampa Bay Lightning, Dallas Stars and Pittsburgh Penguins.
That is a lot of miles for a guy who started as a top ten pick, and plenty of people around the league will remember him for what he did away from the ice too.
