Connor Zary, Brayden Pachal and Matthew Robertson are on NHL waivers today. Here is what the Flames and Rangers could be giving up.
The Calgary Flames made a move few people saw coming.
Center Connor Zary is on waivers today, and he is not the only one.
Defenseman Brayden Pachal joined him on the wire, and the New York Rangers also placed defenseman Matthew Robertson on waivers.
Zary is the name that jumps off the page.
The 25-year-old went 24th overall in 2020 and has played 191 NHL games, all of them with Calgary.
He carries a $3.775 million cap hit through 2027-28, and the Flames were reportedly trying to trade him this summer with a second-round pick as the ask.
A healthy player hitting waivers after that is going to raise eyebrows.
What it means for Calgary
Pachal is a different story. The right-shot defender made the opening night roster and has 177 career NHL games, split between Vegas and Calgary.
The Flames claimed him off waivers from the Golden Knights back in February 2024.
He is paid $1.188 million this season and heads to unrestricted free agency next summer.
The Rangers side
Robertson is a 6-foot-4 left-shot defenseman who grew up in Edmonton and played junior hockey for the Oil Kings.
New York took him 49th overall in 2019, and he is signed through 2026-27 at $812,500.
Michael Eyssimont and Patrick Giles both cleared waivers yesterday, so the real question is whether anyone bites this time.
Any club can put in a claim, and if nobody does, all three will likely be headed to the minors.
