Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE for short, is a neurodegenerative disease that most often affects professional athletes who have suffered multiple concussions. While the disease is most often associated with American football, many athletes in other sports including hockey are dealing with the affects of the disease post-retirement. There is still more research to be done in this area, but
one recent study found that CTE was discovered in 40% of athletes that died before the age of 30. Walsh is not the only one calling out the NHL for turning a blind eye to the condition. Medical doctors have continued to make statements calling for the league to make changes.
