The Toronto Maple Leafs for a few years now have had arguably the most skilled forward base in the league, led by Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander and many more, but one thing they have always been torn down for was defence. They have been missing for a long time a right handed defenceman who was capable of playing top 4 minutes. Luckily for them, the scouts in attendance are from a team that just so happens to have a right handed defenceman who plays 20+ minutes a game and brings a huge offensive upside with him.
At the beginning of the season John Klingberg had requested a trade out of Dallas because he and the team could not agree on a long term deal. It is believed that Klingberg wanted an 8 year deal, while the Stars wanted to keep the deal shorter term between 4-5 years.
Klingberg is on the final year of his contract with a cap hit of $4,250,000, so it is a very manageable number for the Leafs to bring on, but with the amount Klingberg will want on a long term deal, it will most likely only be a rental for the Maple Leafs.
With currently only $1,491,551 in cap space, who do you think the Leafs would be giving back to the Stars to bring in this offensive defenceman? Let's not forget he is only a few years removed from a 67 point season!
