The New York Islanders had high hopes for this season, after back-to-back Eastern Conference Finals appearances the team hoped they'd take another step forward. Unfortunately after a terrible start to the season it appears as though the Isles are destined to miss the playoffs completely this season. With an aging core General Manager, Lou Lamoriello is expected to do his best attempt at re-tooling to be competitive next season.

One of Lamoriello's best trade chips is veteran goalie Seymon Varlamov. Last season Varlamov posted an amazing .929 save percentage, but as the Islanders have dipped so have his numbers. This season Varlamov has a save percentage of .911 which is a significant drop. Despite the drop in numbers it does appear like there are still some interest from teams in Varlamov's services.
One of the teams desperately searching for goaltender help is the Edmonton Oilers, but according to at least one NHL Insider, Varlamov has invoked his trade protection to avoid a deal to the Edmonton Oilers.
If this report is true it would mark the second such instance of a goalie refusing a trade to the Oilers as it has been reported that Marc-Andre Fleury has also invoked his trade protection to avoid a deal to Edmonton.
