They lost the first game of the year to the Montreal Canadiens, squeaked by the Washington Capitals by a late tip in from Auston Matthews and again struggled to get by the Ottawa Senators.

Now to make matters even worse, starting goalie Matt Murray is expected to miss atleast the next 10 games after being placed on Long-Term Injured Reserve.
The one benefit of this though, it gave the Maple Leafs the cap space to move some moves that will hopefully spark the offense.
While the Maple Leafs already called up Erik Kallgren to play backup to Ilya Samsonov, they also made some additional roster moves today:
The @MapleLeafs have recalled D Victor Mete, F Nick Robertson and F Wayne Simmonds from the @TorontoMarlies. Leafs PR (@LeafsPR) October 16, 2022
The hockey world was shocked when Wayne Simmonds was placed on waivers for the first time in his career, but he never did report to the Marlies, instead he stayed with the Leafs.
Robertson was another name that people were a little shocked when he did not make the team. After spending 10 games with the team last year and scoring at a very good pace in the AHL, many believed he was going to be the answer to play with Tavares and Nylander and after 2 games in the AHL where he scored 1 goal and added 1 assist, it looks like he may be getting that chance.
