On October 7th 2020, the Ottawa Senators made a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins for goaltender Matt Murray in exchange for Jonathan Gruden and round 2 pick in the 2020 draft (Joel Blomqvist).

At the time Murray was a 26 year old, 2 time Stanley Cup Champion and was thought to be one of the best up and coming goaltenders. But after a few poor seasons after winning his cups in Pittsburgh, the Penguins decided to move on from him and the Ottawa Senators came calling.

After the trade, they immediately signed Murray to a 4 year deal with an AAV of $6,250,000. We are currently heading into year 3 of this deal, and needless to say, it has not quite worked out in the Ottawa Senators favour.

In his first season with the Senators, Murray had a .893 save percentage through 27 games, and this past season it wasn't that much better, with a .906 through 20 games, but he even found himself waived and put in the AHL for a few games.

Matt Murray is in definite need of a fresh start and so are the Ottawa Senators who want to start being a ''winning team'' this season. After finishing 26th in the league last season, the Ottawa Senators have the 7th overall pick, which a few weeks ago the Senators said it could be available for trade if it brings in a player that can help immediately.

Now we are hearing that this pick is in play for a team if they take Matt Murray off their hands. This could be the perfect opportunity for a team like Arizona to take on a bad contract and get a top 10 pick out of the deal as well.
