When John Tortorella was hired by the Flyers, he was given the opportunity to hire his own coaching staff and today he has hired his first assistant coach.

Today the Flyers announced that they hired Rocky Thompson, who's last role in the NHL was with the San Jose Sharks in 2020.
During COVID, Thompson refused to be vaccinated so the Sharks did not renew his contract because due to NHL rules, Thompson was ineligible to be around the players.
Thompson is very well known for his locker room altercation with Evander Kane after a meeting about the powerplay while on the Sharks.
Kane gave this statement about the altercation:
We were just giving our opinions on what we can do better, and I gave my opinion at one point in time, and I think our assistant coach, he maybe didn't agree with it. Anyway, the meeting was over, we're all kind of getting ready, chatting afterward, and he comes back into the locker room with his shirt off, flexing and kind of being all hype and whatnot, and challenging me to a fight.

Other people who have talked about the altercation have a slightly different story, which, purely speculation, but judging by what we've heard in the media before this may be a little more believable, Kane was apparently arguing with Thompson trying to undermine him during the meeting.
From how angry we've seen Tortorella get in the past, this feels like the perfect hire for him.
R.I.P to the Flyers players.
