The Senators were trying to get an extension with star forward Alex DeBrincat amidst him voicing that he did not want to resign with Ottawa. Inevitably, a deal was not able to be agreed on and the Senators completed a trade to send DeBrincat to the Atlantic Division opponent Detroit Red Wings. But the offer to keep him in Ottawa was just revealed and it was definitely not disappointing.
It was just reported by Auddie James that the Senators had offered DeBrincat an 8 year, $8 million AAV extension to have him locked up long-term. Despite this very enticing offer, DeBrincat still declined, which led to the trade.
After the trade with Detroit was finalized and reported, it was not long after when even more news broke. After just getting traded to his new team, DeBrincat solidified his spot by signing a 4 year, $7.875 million AAV extension. Thus quick agreement evidently proves that he did have interest in getting an extension done, just certainly not with Ottawa.
