Last night he Calgary Flames traded Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers for Johnathan Huberdeau, Mackenzie Weegar, prospect Cole Schwindt, and a 2025 first round pick.
After the deal there have been many Flames fans questioning the deal and even more Panther fans. Some Flames fans thought it was a great move because they got a player that produced more than Tkachuk last season and Tkachuk was not staying around Calgary for more than another season, but some were not fans.
Making this deal was a huge risk for the Flames though as both Huberdeau and Weegar are on the final year of their contracts and are both UFA's, so if they are not flipped for more assets, the Flames could end up losing all 3 of these players for basically nothing.
So with that being said, It hasn't even been a full day since the trade occurred and NHL Insider David Pagnotta reported that teams are calling the Flames about acquiring Huberdeau. The Flames could flip this soon-to-be UFA on a very team friendly deal for quite a few assets.
If Huberdeau is upset with the trade, which personally I believe he is, it will be interesting to see how quick the Flames choose to flip him, if they choose to. It will be even more interesting if he enjoys playing in Calgary and signs a long-term contract.
