This season saw lots of contentious arguments surrounding the place of Pride Nights in the NHL. While most of those debates have simmered down since the regular season's end, the Red Wings have reignited the discussion with their recent actions.
Red Wings Skip Out on Pride
This past weekend saw the largest Pride event in the state of Michigan, Motor City Pride, take place. The festivities are full of big events, and Detroit's major sports teams regularly make appearances.
The Red Wings are usually annual attendants at the event, but made the decision not to participate this year, despite the NFL's Lions and NBA's Pistons both showing up.
This move had fans puzzled and wondering what had changed within the Red Wings organization since last June to cause this shift in allyship.
Red Wings Turning Their Backs on LGBTQ Community
Sports teams' appearances at Pride events such as the Motor City Pride Festival are a big deal for those in the LGBTQ+ community. It shows them that the athletes they love and look up to support them in living their most authentic life. When the Red Wings or other organizations chose to skip out on events such as these, it can leave LGBTQ+ fans feeling rejected.
The Red Wings haven't made any show of public support towards the LGBTQ+ community in the 12 days since Pride Month started. While many fans think that it's not their job to voice public support for a group such as the LGBTQ+ community, others believe that little actions like showing up to Pride events can do wonders for the community.
We don't know the Red Wings' reasoning for no-showing this year, and we may never know. Whatever the reason, they've certainly stirred up drama.
