A new report from an NHL insider has connected a Calgary Flames star on an expiring contract to the team he was originally drafted by. If the two sides cannot agree on an extension the player could be in store for a homecoming.
Flames Star Player Could Be On The Move
The Calgary Flames have become iconic at this point for not being able to re-sign star players that are on an expiring contract. This season they have yet another opportunity to do so and look to be parting ways with the player instead.
Flames forward Elias Lindholm is in the last year of his deal. During his time in Calgary Lindholm became a star and exploded offensively. However, in recent years his production has come back down leading both sides to consider going in different directions.
If the Flames are going to move on from Lindholm his former team that drafted him back in 2013 will be considered a favorite to secure his services.
A Homecoming Reunion For Lindholm?
A report from NHL insider Pierre LeBrun has indicated that one team that could be interested in Elias Lindholm is the Carolina Hurricanes.
It also wouldn't surprise me if Carolina at least has had internal discussions about whether it makes sense to try to bring Lindholm back.
The one roadblock that could stand in the way is Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon. LeBrun says that Dundon prefers to stay away from rental players. This would mean Lindholm could need to sign an extension to make this work.
The caveat there would be that owner Tom Dundon has generally been against paying for rental players, so it probably only works if Lindholm's signed to an extension
If Elias Lindholm comes back to Carolina and signs long term it could be a healing process of sorts. The two sides parted ways due to not being able to get a long-term deal done. With the Hurricanes in more of a competitive position now Lindholm could find the situation more attractive.
As always with trade reports and rumors this story is developing. As more twists and turns are taken we will provide updates to you.
