Former longtime San Jose Sharks forward Ryane Clowe departed the team as assistant general manager and is now in the same role with the Rangers, while Blake Wheeler also joins as a Hockey Operations Advisor.
Former San Jose Sharks forward Ryane Clowe
suddenly resigned from his position as assistant general manager of the team, citing family reasons, but has now almost immediately gotten a new job with another former team he once played for.
Clowe has been announced as the new assistant general manager of the New York Rangers, for whom he briefly played near the end of his NHL career. Also, the Rangers hired former Winnipeg Jets captain Blake Wheeler as a Hockey Operations Advisor.
Like Clowe, Wheeler also briefly played for the Rangers near the end of his NHL career. Additionally, this will be Clowe's 2nd time working for the Rangers, as he previously worked for them for 3 years before taking the role of AGM with the Sharks last summer.
- Ryan Martin has been promoted to Associate General Manager and will continue in his role as General Manager of the Wolf Pack.
- Jim Sullivan has been promoted to Assistant General Manager.
- Ryane Clowe has been named Assistant General Manager.
- Blake Wheeler has been named Hockey Operations Adviser.
All will work under GM Chris Drury.
How Wheeler's Move Could Impact the Rangers' Cup Push
Wheeler had vast NHL experience playing with the Jets, including a run to the 2018 Western Conference Final against the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Rangers clearly felt they needed new voices in the organization after such a disappointing season last year in which they missed the playoffs, only a year after winning the President's Trophy with one of the best records in team history.
Wheeler's joining of the Rangers is also the latest example of a former player transitioning from his role on the ice as a player to a role in the front office.
