Alex Ovechkin's future is up in the air, but according to one of his long-time teammates, he could have a few good years left in him yet.
After becoming the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer in 2024/25, many have speculated that Alex Ovechkin could be coming towards the end of his NHL career, with reports noting that this upcoming year could be his last.
When the 2025/26 campaign begins, Ovechkin will be 40-years of age, and while he still managed to tally 44 goals in just 65 games despite a broken leg last season, there were clear signs that he was slowing down.
However, despite all of the signs, his teammate
Tom Wilson doesn't believe things are over, as he has revealed that he believes his long-time teammate could keep playing for multiple years to come.
"Who knows what he's going to do? I mean, if it's his last year, I don't know. You can never doubt the guy. He could play two, three more years. He's a guy who loves to score. He loves the game of hockey. We'll see what happens. He's going to knock down 900 [goals] and then start chipping away at the next milestone."
While Ovechkin showed signs of slowing down, his role on the team can be diminished while still being very effective given his goal scoring abilities, and given that he'll pass 900 goals at some point this season, perhaps he wants to make his record as impossible to catch as he can.
Ultimately, we'll likely learn about Ovi's future in the NHL before the 2025/26 campaign begins, and given what his teammates have said about him, it wouldn't shock anyone if he played on beyond this season.
