Elliotte Friedman says the Vegas Golden Knights intend to hire Ryan Craig as their next head coach, per 32 Thoughts.

John Tortorella is 67 years old and told Sportsnet his commitment to Vegas ends on June 30, the final day of his contract.
After losing the 2026 Stanley Cup Final in six games to the Carolina Hurricanes, neither side has made any public move to extend the relationship.
That framing matters more than the headline. Tortorella wasn't brought in to be the future of the franchise - he was a midseason emergency hire on March 29, called in to salvage a team that had lost six of its last seven games under Bruce Cassidy.
He pushed Vegas through the playoffs and into a Stanley Cup Final. Now the organization is executing a plan that was already in motion long before that run began.
Re Golden Knights coaching: "The belief here is that they're gonna hire Ryan Craig who was their coach at AHL Henderson."

- Elliotte Friedman

Craig carries more Vegas DNA than any outside hire

Ryan Craig has spent his entire coaching career inside the Golden Knights organization, arriving as an assistant before the 2017-18 inaugural season.
He spent six years learning the system under Gerard Gallant, Pete DeBoer, and Bruce Cassidy before GM Kelly McCrimmon appointed him head coach of the Henderson Silver Knights in June 2023.
That background gives Craig something no external hire could walk in with - institutional knowledge of how this specific front office builds and values a roster.
He turned Henderson into an AHL contender this past season, which is precisely the résumé McCrimmon wanted before making the call.

The roster stakes make this hire urgent

The decision doesn't exist in a vacuum, with Jack Eichel still in the prime years of his contract and both Alex Pietrangelo and Mark Stone aging.
The Golden Knights' championship window isn't permanent, and continuity behind the bench matters.
A Craig hire signals Vegas plans to protect what it has built rather than reset under a new voice.
Tortorella stabilized the ship and nearly made history; Craig is the plan that was already waiting.
