David Pagnotta put the Vancouver Canucks GM search under heat, and Francesco Aquilini's ownership shadow now feels impossible to ignore.

The Canucks fired Patrik Allvin on April 17 after a 25-49-8 season that ended with Vancouver buried at the bottom of the league.
That record matters because this job is not just a promotion.
It is a pressure test.
Pagnotta's line cuts straight through the noise. There are only 32 NHL GM chairs, so candidates may swallow bad conditions to get one.
"There's 32 National Hockey League GM jobs, and that's it. So if you want one, you gotta suck it up in some circumstances."

- David Pagnotta
The question is whether Vancouver is selling authority or just selling a title.

David Pagnotta Puts Vancouver Canucks Ownership On Trial

Fans are right to be skeptical because this market has watched too many resets get squeezed by impatience.
Jim Rutherford said the goal is younger players growing into the next competitive core.
That sounds clean.
The hard part is giving a new GM enough runway to actually build it.
Vancouver's blue line no longer has the same identity after the Quinn Hughes trade, and that changes everything.
A real GM needs power over pro scouting, cap timing, and the draft table.
Without that, the Canucks risk hiring a messenger instead of a builder.
Elias Pettersson's 19-32-51 season shows the problem clearly. He can still drive play, but he cannot drag a broken structure alone.
Jake DeBrusk led the team with 23 goals, which says Vancouver still has useful pieces.
It also says the top-six needs more bite.
The next GM must decide whether Adam Foote fits the rebuild, whether Thatcher Demko stays, and how fast to flip veterans.
That is not a PR job.
That is the franchise.
