Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman Chris Pronger made some comments about Quinn Hughes and Cale Makar that caught many off guard recently.

Chris Pronger is one of the best defensemen of his generation.
The Dryden, Ontario native played in 1167 career regular-season games, putting up 157 goals and 698 points in the process.
He also had a career rating of 183 and accumulated several accolades including a Norris trophy in 2000 and a Stanley Cup in 2010.
He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015. Needless to say, he knows what it takes to be an elite defenseman in the NHL.
Which is exactly why so many hockey fans and analysts alike respect his opinions when it comes to contemporary players in the league.
In recent years, there has been some debate as to who the best defenseman in the NHL is thanks to the rise of Quinn Hughes, who has added an element of goal scoring to his game that didn't exist before.
The Canucks had a big scare earlier this month as Hughes went down with an injury, but luckily he is back in the lineup now.
The Canucks captain has 16 goals in 53 games this season, one shy of is career high of 17 he set just last year.
He's added 47 helpers for 63 points overall. Has this been enough to dethrone Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar as the league's best?
Well according to Pronger, the answer is no.

At this point, most NHL fans would probably agree with the hall of famer. After all, Makar has 25 goals and 78 points already this season.
He also has two 20-goal seasons under his belt prior to this one, including a 28-goal campaign in 2021-22.
Makar has 111 career goals and 414 points in 383 games compared to Hughes' 59 goals and 396 points in 418 games.
The Avs blueliner also has a big advantage when it comes to career rating with +133 compared to Hughes' +38.
So Canucks fans might be upset that Pronger thinks Makar is better, but at the end of the day, the stats do seem to back him up.
