Toronto Maple Leafs connected to a trade sending Nick Robertson to Winnipeg for a former top-10 pick

For much of the NHL offseason rumors have been flying regarding the future of Nick Robertson with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Early in the summer reports began to come out that Nick Robertson wanted to be traded.

Now with the NHL season coming in a matter of weeks, Nick Robertson remains a restricted free agent without a contract. If he truly has no plans to sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs then a trade is the only way forward. As a result, new trade scenarios have been put together.

One particular scenario would land the Maple Leafs a former top-10 pick forward to bring into the lineup.

A new report from Stephen Nixon of Editor In Leaf has connected the Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets to a potential trade.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking for a trade partner to take on Nick Robertson and Stephen Nixon believes the Winnipeg Jets could be the perfect candidate. They also have a struggling prospect in Cole Perfetti who could be looking for a change of scenery.

In addition, Cole Perfetti is a natural center which the Toronto Maple Leafs have been looking for on their third line. If they could land Cole Perfetti they could plug him into that spot immediately. In his last 2 NHL seasons, Cole Perfetti has hovered around the 30-point mark which is around where a third-line center should be on a contending team.

The Winnipeg Jets have depth at center but could use more young talent on the wing. Nick Robertson when healthy could fill that role perfectly. In his most recent season, Nick Robertson played 56 NHL games and tallied 27 points. He likely could have more immediate upside if given more ice time but carries more risk.

With Nick Robertson being the older and less highly touted prospect the Toronto Maple Leafs likely would have to give up an extra asset. If the Maple Leafs see untapped potential in Cole Perfetti the move could be worth giving more up to snag him.

The NHL season is just around the corner and the Toronto Maple Leafs will likely make a move involving Nick Robertson before opening night. If he is traded a prospect for a prospect swap like this could be the most logical expected return.
