The children of Börje Salming unveil the project he never got to finish

Börje Salming's children unveiled the Salming 1,148 watch at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, completing a design their father started in 2018.

Teresa, Bianca, Anders and Rasmus Salming stood steps from their father's Hall of Fame plaque on Thursday. The watch carries the number of NHL games he played, and only that many will ever exist.

Börje began sketching the design on a blank sheet of paper with his friend Mats Kullenberg, now CEO of Salming Watches.

He was still working on it when he announced his ALS diagnosis in 2022, and he died that November at 71.

Salming Watches donates $170 Canadian from every sale to the NHL Alumni Association and its charities, NHL.com reported.

Multiply that by the full run and the fund tops out near $195,000, a finite figure rather than a renewing one.

That ceiling was a choice. The family could have kept production open-ended, but tying the run to his games played means the total can never grow past him.

Roughly 2,200 people have inquired about a watch that sells for about $12,000 Canadian, and only 1,148 were produced. The first 100 are reserved for NHL players, leaving barely a thousand for everyone else.

Darryl Sittler already has No. 27, matching the number he wore in Toronto. Watch 001 went to NHL Alumni Association president Glenn Healy, who handed it to the Hall for a case honouring Salming and the Courage Award named for him.

That award has gone to Nicklas Lidstrom, Jari Kurri and Mats Sundin since 2023. Salming signed in Toronto in 1973, when Swedes in the NHL were a novelty, and Healy counted 92 of them starting last season.

His children did not stretch the run to match that growth.

They stopped at 1,148, because that is the number he earned.
