Matthew Knies speaks out after being traded by the Toronto Maple Leafs

The 23-year-old winger spoke after Toronto sent him to the Columbus Blue Jackets in a six-player blockbuster on the eve of the 2026-27 season. Reflecting on the move, Knies said:

Trade chatter around Knies had followed him for months, so the outcome carried a sense of inevitability.

The timing, however, jolted him. Toronto waited until the final hours before rosters were due, then completed a swap that brought winger Kirill Marchenko, forward Miles Wood and goaltender Elvis Merzlikins to the Maple Leafs.

Knies, center Steven Lorentz, defenseman Emil Andrae and a second-round pick headed to Columbus. Marchenko will also sign an extension in Toronto.

Columbus general manager Don Waddell reportedly phoned Knies with the news and explained that discussions with Leafs GM John Chayka had gone on for several weeks. Knies thanked him and ended the call.

For Toronto, the move is a bet on Marchenko's scoring touch over Knies' physical game. Knies had signed a six-year, $7.75 million per season extension in 2025 after posting 29 goals and 58 points, so the Leafs gave up a young core piece on a long contract.

Elliotte Friedman said on the Real Kyper and Bourne Show that the only concern he heard was Knies' injury history, not his character.

For Columbus, Knies arrives as a power forward who can raise the ceiling of a club chasing a playoff push in the East.

Now the focus shifts to how quickly he settles in, and whether Toronto's gamble pays off. Fans in both cities will track every shift once he debuts in a Columbus sweater, and the early results will shape how this trade is judged.
