Maple Leafs sign PTO defenseman to a one-year deal

The move would convert Blankenburg's professional tryout into a standard NHL deal after he impressed the coaching staff throughout training camp.

Blankenburg arrived in Toronto earlier this month on a PTO, first reported by Boston Globe insider Kevin Paul Dupont. At the time, the signing was viewed as blueline insurance while Chris Tanev continued recovering from offseason core surgery.

New Leafs general manager John Chayka was said to be exploring depth options on the right side in case Tanev's return is delayed into the regular season.

Blankenburg, 28, was an unrestricted free agent for much of the offseason despite coming off his best NHL season.

He split 2025-26 between the Nashville Predators and Colorado Avalanche, posting career highs with eight goals and 16 assists for 24 points in 61 games. He also made his playoff debut with Colorado, scoring a goal in five postseason appearances.

Undersized at 5-foot-9 and 176 pounds, Blankenburg has built a reputation as a mobile, puck moving defenseman capable of contributing on both special teams.

His underlying numbers last season ranked him among the more efficient depth defensemen in the league, even in sheltered third-pairing minutes.

Signing Blankenburg to a bottom pairing role gives the Leafs another mobile option behind their top four while keeping the cap hit manageable.

Toronto has been working through a tight cap situation this summer, and a $1.4 million deal would fit within their flexibility once Max Domi's injury relief kicks in.

If finalized, the contract rewards Blankenburg for a strong camp showing and gives Toronto a depth piece who has already proven he can handle NHL minutes. Leafs fans will be watching closely to see how he factors into the opening night roster.
