Maple Leafs GM search comes down to Evan Gold and Ryan Martin

Evan Gold and Ryan Martin in Toronto's GM finals tells you the Leafs want a builder, not another headline hire.
Keith Pelley already said the next hockey boss must be data-centered, and the club had not even locked its final structure on March 31.
So this search is not about finding the loudest name.
It is about finding someone who can tighten process, rebuild trust, and make better evidence-based calls around the core.
"Sources say two of the 'finalists' advancing in the Maple Leafs GM search this week are Bruins assistant GM Evan Gold and NYR assistant GM Ryan Martin."

Evan Gold screams cap, contracts, and pipeline.
Gold has been an assistant general manager, director of legal affairs, and Providence Bruins GM, which is a real mix of NHL cap work and AHL roster control.
Evan Gold and Toronto Maple Leafs fit
Fans are right to read this as a reset in style, not just a reset in title.
Ryan Martin points the same way.
The Rangers promoted Martin to associate general manager in September 2025, and he still runs the Hartford Wolf Pack, which puts player development right in the middle of his file.
That is why this feels bigger than replacing Brad Treliving.
Toronto closed 2025-26 at 32-36-14, missed the playoffs, and finished with real questions on roster depth, development, and coach Craig Berube's place under the next boss.
The Leafs are hunting for someone who can support Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and Matthew Knies with cleaner cap decisions, better support pieces, and a healthier prospect flow.
That does not prove a hire lands this week.
It proves Toronto knows the next mistake cannot be cosmetic.
