Maple Leafs confirm the worst for Max Domi and Dakota Joshua

The Toronto Maple Leafs have shuffled their injured list ahead of the new season, placing Max Domi on long-term injured reserve and Dakota Joshua on injured reserve.
The moves look routine on paper, but they carry real salary cap weight for general manager John Chayka.
Why Max Domi Is on LTIR
Domi's situation is the more serious one. The 31-year-old forward had offseason back surgery to address an issue he played through last season, and complications left his recovery without a timeline.
He then failed his physical at the start of camp, and Chayka has said he remains out indefinitely. Domi carries a $3.75 million cap hit, which sits just under the in-season LTIR relief limit, so Toronto gets full cap relief for him.
That matters because the Leafs were tight against the ceiling. PuckPedia reported Toronto exceeded the cap by $4.7 million on its opening roster, with Elvis Merzlikins and Cade Webber already on LTIR.
Moving Domi into the LTIR pool creates room for a possible addition, which is the real reason this move is getting attention.
What Joshua's Status Means
Joshua is dealing with a core issue that Chayka described as week to week. Regular injured reserve lets Toronto keep his $3.25 million on the books without a long-term commitment, and he can return once he is ready. LTIR would only make sense if his timeline stretches much further.
The bigger picture is a forward group that has been reshaped fast. Toronto landed Kirill Marchenko in a blockbuster with Columbus, sending out Matthew Knies, and opens with 13 forwards, seven defensemen and two goalies.
Jack Roslovic, Colton Sissons, Nick Paul, Teddy Blueger and Brandon Duhaime give the bottom six a new look, but losing Domi and Joshua removes experienced depth.
Expect Toronto to use its freed space carefully. Chayka has little margin for error, and the Leafs must balance injuries, a 23-man roster limit and cap compliance.
Watch for a depth addition or call-up if Joshua's absence drags on. That flexibility could matter quickly once the schedule heats up.
